Rain, Bears, and Yukon Roads
August 23 to August 29, 2026 · Prince Rupert, Jade City, Watson Lake, Whitehorse, Dawson City

We pulled into Prince Rupert as rain came down, steak from The Speckled Sau sizzling out of the van. We grabbed coffee at Cowpucinno and walked the waterfront. Near Kispiox, a black bear with a hurt paw caught our attention.
The Tseax Cone lava field felt otherworldly, pale lichen covering rock from an eruption in the 1700s. After four days of rain, we pushed toward Jade City and crossed into the Yukon. Grizzlies appeared. Someone got a gift: “I never got to see an otter up close in BC so someone got me my very own!”
Watson Lake had the Sign Post Forest. Carcross was rainy but beautiful. At the Fireweed Market in Whitehorse, we tried homemade pop. In Dawson City, we drank a sour toe cocktail at the Sourdough Saloon. The visit felt good: “I genuinely liked it there. Everyone was so nice.” Three minutes up the Dempster Highway after we left, a truck was in a ditch. We waited and met a trucker from Nova Scotia. The Tombstone Mountains rose behind us.
